Grebel Gallery Exhibit | New Fraktur – Meg Harder @ CGR
May 6 – Oct 25 all-day

Meg Harder is a Mennonite female artist working in the Haldimand Treaty Territory/Grand River Watershed. Her practice explores bioregional themes through a variety of media including works on paper, projection, installation, and social choreography.

Harder’s recent work, New Fraktur, draws on the Mennonite tradition of fraktur art, a highly imaginative, densely detailed, and symbolic illuminated folk art practiced historically in the Waterloo Region. This work aims to carry forward the aesthetic sensibilities and fantastical elements of fraktur while expanding its visual vocabulary and narrative potential. This is achieved through the integration of appropriated archaic and highly abstracted symbols, pattern, and motifs found within Mennonite visual culture with newly imagined imagery that engages with contemporary themes and interests (e.g. bioregional and local culture, feminist and queer theory). These new works aim to disrupt problematic (e.g. colonial, Christian, and patriarchal) narratives, resist any ultimate interpretation, and create space to reimagine historical and future realities in the Grand River Watershed.

Grebel Gallery Exhibit | New Fraktur @ CGR
May 6 @ 8:30 am – Oct 25 @ 6:00 pm

Meg Harder is an interdisciplinary artist working and living in the Grand River Watershed. Harder graduated with a BA in Fine Art from the University of Waterloo, which included a six month exchange at Bezalel Academy of Art in Jerusalem. She studied under Paula Wilson at Haystack Mountain school of crafts in 2018. She was the 2015 Eastern Comma Artist in Residence at Rare Charitable Research Reserve and at Vermont Studio Centre in 2018. She has exhibited at the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery, Contemporary Art Forum of Kitchener and Area, and The Museum, Kitchener. She is a recent recipient of the Ontario Arts Council Emerging Artist Project Grant.

Harder’s present research focuses on artistic practices that expand and disrupt canonized art forms and narrative genres to express emerging realities and revisionist histories. She draws on fraktur folk art, an imaginative and densely detailed illuminated calligraphy, historically produced by early Mennonite settlers to Ontario. Fraktur was traditionally made to venerate important religious and cultural texts and was displayed in everyday contexts like the walls of homes and in the covers of bibles and hymnals. In recognition of her ancestral traditions, her ink and gouache drawings carry forward the aesthetic sensibilities of fraktur and Biblical myth, while reframing their contents with a queer, feminine, and bioregional optic. By reinterpreting these archived images in a personal lexicon of motifs and symbols to create fictive environments, she aims to disarm exploitative narratives and create space for new histories and futures.

Feeding the Colony, the Nation and the Market: Transported Foodways and New Crops in Latin American Mennonite Communities

How did persistent attachment to wheat shape Mennonite settlement in Paraguay? What did it mean for Mennonites to rapidly expand the availability and affordability of butter, milk, and cheese in local markets in northern Mexico and eastern Bolivia? Learn how the place of Mennonites in Latin American societies over the past century has been premised on practices of producing, marketing and consuming food.

About the speaker:

Dr. Ben Nobbs-Thiessen is a postdoctoral fellow at Washington State University. His research and teaching interests include migration, transnational history, agriculture, and environmental history. He is the second recipient of the Fretz Fellowship at Conrad Grebel University College.

Aging and Spirituality: Finding courage and resilience @ CGR
Jun 13 @ 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

June 13 and 14, 2019, 10 AM–4PM

We can find ourselves in new territory where much is unknown as we face challenges and difficulties in illness, in the aging process, and in dying. In the same way the grit inside an oyster transforms into a pearl, we wonder if our fear and frustration can be transformed into something just as beautiful in us.

You are invited to a time of learning, reflection, and self-care.

We will be led by a collaborative, experienced group of spiritual companions of various faith traditions who work in long-term care, hospice, and the community: Teresa Bryant, Miriam Frey, Dale Guenter, Jane Kuepfer, Celia McBride, and Maureen McDonnell.

The context of the gathering will allow time for contemplation, relaxation, and community connections. Join us as we consider and experience together the role of spirituality in finding courage and resilience in our work, in our homes, and within ourselves. Come for one day, two days, or make it a retreat and stay overnight at Grebel.
