Symposium Subcommittee Meeting June 1
In attendance: Emily, Laura, Matt, Bob. Isaiah
- Review of feedback from last year (included in previous minutes for October 1st debrief)
- Date:
- The Centre for Peace Advancement is having Peace Week from September 18-22
- WR Nonviolence has IDOPAN (International Days of Peace and Nonviolence) Sept 22- Oct 2
- We think Saturday evenings are best because it’s hard for people to give up a whole Saturday, and Sunday will interfere with religious attendees
- oSo Saturday evening, September 23rd, 4-8:30 like last year
- Venue
- Fresh grounds café – too small
- Liked the Commons Vibe, but hard to have a large group and avoid the chair shuffling from last year
- St. John’s Kitchen seems like the best option. Cost would be $200 plus $90 for staff, so comparable to $250 that we paid last year
- Has a large gym, a stage
- The accoustics are bad, but could be better with a good system and someone managing sound
- No projector, but we don’t think we’ll need one
- Has a kitchen and breakout space if needed
- Laura will confirm availability
- Organization of event
- 4-4:30 mingle, meet and greet
- 4:30-5:30 panel with speakers (4 speakers talk for 5 min each, then 20 min for moderated questions and 20 mins for audience questions
- 5:30-5:45 – pass the mic to each group, but super quick – 1-2 sentences about what peace in KW means to them.
- Will get groups to be visual and help audience to know who’s there, but avoid the long saga of last time.
- Will give each group a paragraph in a program for them to talk more about what they’re about
- 5:45-6:45 introduce the groups, grab dinner, and head on over to a discussion area n one of several themes
- 6:45-7 break for dessert and coffee
- 7-8:15 round 2 of discussions, switch it up
- Throughout the evening have some long butcher paper for people to make peace connections on. Put each of the groups on to begin with, and have people make their connections between groups
- Panelists
- Need suggestions of speakers! Some names thrown out were Richard Walsh, Jim Loney, someone from CPT, Trudy Baulme, Thomas Homer-Dixon, Rick Cober-Bauman

- We will suggest speakers by email and bring the list of suggestions to the next large KW Peace potluck
