URGENT!!! A global demonstration is being launched to protest the expulsion of youth and activists from #occupyCOP25 from the climate summit grounds.
WATERLOO REGION ACTIVISTS ARE MOBILIZING!!!
Come out and strike – 4:30 to 5pm, Waterloo Public Square.
Bring your pots and pans to make some noise!!!
Yesterday, over 300 attendees of COP25, the UN climate change summit in Madrid, were at wits end with the stalled and ineffective negotiations. Banging on pots and pans, they blocked the entrance to the summit, stalling the negotiations. And without warning, they were kicked out of the conference, badges revoked and barred from returning.
Yesterday, the voices of millions of people were silenced. These activists were climate strikers and labor organizers, indigenous land and water protectors – but they were representing us, millions of everyday people. They were advocating for the rights of those most affected by and least responsible for this crisis. They were silenced and removed, barred from the negotiations, while fossil fuel lobbyists remained inside.
In response, the climate strikers in Madrid issued a call – calling out for an international strike and day of action on Friday, December 13th.
In Waterloo Region we heed their call. We cannot accept this injustice. We must stand up for our rights and our future!
We strike on Friday to call attention to the inaction at COP25, the political games and unambitious targets and stalled negotiations. We strike to hold the Canadian government accountable, as they negotiate over the fate of millions, and refuse to pay our fair share. We stand in solidarity with indigenous people, people from the Global South, and people that are already suffering on the front lines of the climate crisis.
Join us Friday Dec 13th at 4:30p in Waterloo Public Square. We must show that we will no longer accept empty words. We need leaders that listen to the people. We demand climate justice!
